The international water polo calendar for 2026 is shaping up to be both intense and unusually condensed, with major senior tournaments front-loaded into the opening weeks of the year and a notably short summer season to follow.
European Championships take centre stage
The year begins at full throttle with the Men’s European Water Polo Championships, scheduled from January 10 to 25 in Belgrade. Serbia’s capital will host Europe’s elite men’s national teams in what is expected to be one of the most atmospheric tournaments on the calendar.
Immediately after the men’s event, attention shifts to the women’s competition. The Women’s European Championships will be staged in Funchal, the capital of Madeira, marking a rare opportunity for the Portuguese island to host one of water polo’s flagship events.
The decision to move the European Championships to winter in a non-Olympic year has significant knock-on effects. Most notably, it compresses the remainder of the senior international season, leaving very limited space for summer competitions.
World Cup Final Eight in Sydney
As a result, the only major senior tournament of the summer will be the World Cup Final, held from July 20 to 25 in Sydney. Both men’s and women’s competitions will follow the same format: Final Eights featuring eight teams each, contested over three competition days (quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals).
Qualification for Sydney will be decided in April and May, with:
- The top six teams from World Cup Division 1
- The top two teams from Division 2
advancing to the Final Eight. Australia’s men’s and women’s national teams are already qualified automatically as tournament hosts. At this stage, the host nations for the Division 1 and Division 2 tournaments have yet to be confirmed.
A busy year for youth competitions
While the senior calendar is condensed, 2026 will be a busy year for youth and junior water polo. The World U16 Championships for both boys and girls will take place in Zagreb. In addition, the World U18 Championships and the European U20 Championships are also scheduled for the year.
Although dates for these tournaments have been announced, host locations for four of them are still to be determined, with further details expected in the coming months.
Club season resumes and historic Malta Final Fours
At club level, the 2025/26 European season will resume on February 11, with the 6th round of the Men’s Champions League group stage. The calendar will again pause briefly to accommodate the World Cup Division 1 and 2 tournaments before concluding in the second week of June.
One of the standout innovations of the season will come in May. For the first time, the Women’s and Men’s Champions League Final Fours will be staged at the same time and in the same location. Both events will take place in Malta:
- Women’s Final Four: June 10 and 12
- Men’s Final Four: June 11 and 13
This combined Final Four format marks a significant milestone for European club water polo and is expected to deliver a festival-style showcase for the sport.
Challenger Cup first silverware of the year
The first international club trophy of 2026 will be awarded in March, at the final tournament of the Men’s Challenger Cup. The host venue will be decided after the second qualification round in February, once the finalists are confirmed.
