Angelos Vlachopoulos Leaves Novi Beograd – Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, and Radnički in the Race

Angelos Vlachopoulos has confirmed his departure from VK Novi Beograd, drawing a close to a three-season stint with the Serbian powerhouse.

The Greek international now finds himself at a crossroads, with three serious contenders for his signature: Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, and Serbian champions Radnički Kragujevac.

The 33-year-old right-handed driver, born in Thessaloniki, is widely considered one of the most complete players of his generation. Since arriving in Belgrade in 2021, Vlachopoulos has helped Novi Beograd to three consecutive Champions League finals, multiple domestic titles, and two Adriatic League crowns. His influence on the team’s attack and leadership on the international stage has cemented his status among Europe’s elite.

Three Destinations in Play

A return to Olympiacos would reunite Vlachopoulos with the club where he won three Greek Championships and three Greek Cups between 2013 and 2016. He also reached the Champions League final with the Piraeus side in 2016 and was named Greek Championship MVP that same season.

Another option is Panathinaikos, a rising force in Greek water polo. The Athens-based club has already lured fellow Greek international Dimitris Skoumpakis from Novi Beograd. A move here would not only strengthen their ambitions in the Greek league but could mark a new golden era for the “Greens.”

Meanwhile, Radnički Kragujevac — fresh off a Serbian Championship title — are aggressively recruiting top-tier talent ahead of a serious Champions League push. The club has already begun signing the best players in the Serbian league, and landing Vlachopoulos would be a statement of intent. His familiarity with Serbian water polo and European experience would make him a natural fit.

Decorated Career

Vlachopoulos has won medals at every major level of international competition:

  • Olympic silver with Greece at Tokyo 2020
  • World Championship bronzes (2015, 2022)
  • World League bronze (2016)
  • Multiple medals at the Mediterranean Games and Youth Championships

He was named to the Total Waterpolo World Team in 2021, was the Champions League top scorer in 2020–21, and was voted Greek Water Polo Player of the Year in 2022. Most recently, he was named Adriatic League Right Winger of the Year for the 2023–24 season.

Standing at 179 cm, Vlachopoulos may not be the most physically imposing figure, but his technical brilliance, vision, and ability to control the rhythm of a game have made him indispensable for both club and country.

With a decorated CV and plenty left in the tank, his next move could have major implications—whether it’s a return to Greece or a continued adventure in Serbian waters.
