Greek water polo star Athina Giannopoulou is reportedly on the verge of signing with Spanish powerhouse Sabadell ahead of the 2025–26 season.
The 23-year-old wing player has been a pivotal figure for both her club, Vouliagmeni, and the Greek national team.
Giannopoulou recently led NC Vouliagmeni to a historic victory in the Greek A1 Ethniki Women’s Water Polo League, ending a 12-year title drought. In the decisive fifth game of the finals against Olympiacos, she scored five goals, propelling her team to a 12–11 win and securing their 12th national championship.
On the international stage, Giannopoulou has been instrumental in Greece’s recent successes. She was part of the squad that clinched a bronze medal at the 2024 European Championships in Eindhoven and played a key role in Greece’s historic gold medal win at the 2025 Women’s Water Polo World Cup in Chengdu, where they defeated Hungary 13–9 in the final.
CN Sabadell, known for its dominance in European women’s water polo, is looking to bolster its roster with Giannopoulou’s addition. The Spanish club has a rich history of success, including multiple European titles, and Giannopoulou’s experience and skill set are expected to complement their ambitions.
While neither club has officially confirmed the transfer, the move is seen as a strategic step for Giannopoulou to compete at the highest level of European water polo. Her potential signing with Sabadell underscores the club’s commitment to maintaining its elite status in the sport.
Waterpolo 360 understands that Sabadell will also soon announce the signings of Isabel Piralkova, Isabel Williams and Paula Crespi.
