Djordje Filipovic Named New Head Coach of Steaua Bucurest

Steaua București has officially appointed Djordje Filipovic as the new head coach of its men’s water polo team ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The 41-year-old Serbian coach returns to a club he knows well, having played for Steaua between 2015 and 2018.

During his playing days with the Romanian giants, Filipovic won three national titles and lifted the Romanian Cup twice—firmly establishing himself as a key figure in one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history.

For the past five years, Filipovic served as assistant coach at Serbian powerhouse VK Novi Beograd. During that time, he contributed to a remarkable run of domestic and continental success, with Novi Beograd winning three consecutive Serbian Championships (2022, 2023, 2024) and reaching the LEN Champions League final twice (2022, 2023).

Speaking about his return to Bucharest, Filipovic expressed both pride and ambition:

“I’m happy to be back at Steaua. This is a major step in my coaching career. I accepted the offer because I know what Steaua represents. I played here and I know the red-and-blue family, its spirit and traditions. Steaua is a European and global brand.”

The new head coach is aiming high, with a clear focus on domestic silverware and strong performances in European competitions. He also underlined his commitment to youth development:

“The objectives are clear—winning trophies at home and representing Romania with pride in Europe. Personally, I also hope to promote several young players from Steaua’s youth academy. It’s a strong school and an important part of the club’s identity.”

Filipovic’s appointment signals a new chapter for Steaua, as the club looks to build on recent successes and return to the pinnacle of Romanian and European water polo.
