Vasas have confirmed significant updates to their professional coaching structure ahead of the 2025/26 season, with the return of Róbert Kovács as assistant coach alongside Branislav Mitrovic under head coach Slobodan Nikic.
Kovács, a former Vasas player and coach, rejoins the club after a successful spell as head coach of OSC. In his new role, he will serve as assistant coach to Nikic for the senior team while also taking on responsibilities within the youth department. He will act as deputy to youth head coach László Földi, focusing specifically on integrating talented academy players into the senior squad.
“It’s a new and big challenge for me,” said Kovács. “I might be stepping out of my comfort zone, but I return with great openness and curiosity. During our last match between Vasas and OSC, a Vasas fan told me, ‘Welcome home’—that says everything about my relationship with this club. I’m excited to contribute to both the senior and youth setups and to help build a strong and successful team.”
Joining Kovács on the touchline is two-time Olympic champion Branislav Mitrovic, who will expand his role after assisting both youth and senior teams last season. With Csaba Mátéfalvy stepping down from his senior duties after 20 years, Mitrovics will take charge of goalkeeper development. Mátéfalvy, a legend of the club, will remain involved with the youth section.
“I will try to help with the entire professional setup, but of course, after Csaba’s departure, the main focus will be preparing our goalkeepers,” said Mitrovics. “With the new rules placing even more importance on goalkeepers, this role is crucial. We want two first-team goalkeepers in top form, and we’ll also work closely with our talented youngsters like Levente Sudár and Lóránt Makány.”
Head coach Slobodan Nikic welcomed the additions, saying, “We’re forming a very strong professional team. Bane was already a great asset this past season, and Robi brings proven results and club loyalty. Everyone will have to adapt to the new system, but I believe this group, including all of our returning staff, gives us an excellent foundation for the future.”
