Ferencvaros and Vasas have swiftly secured their places in the final of the Hungarian Men’s Water Polo League, winning their first matches of the semifinals.
The playoff system in Hungary is unique: points earned in mutual regular-season games carry over into the semifinals. Teams must accumulate seven points to reach the final. Since no draws are allowed (each win is worth three points), Ferencvaros and Vasas needed just one more victory after strong regular seasons against their opponents.
Ferencvaros Dominates BVSC Again
Ferencvaros, the reigning European champions, had already convincingly beaten BVSC twice during the regular season (16:7 and 14:8). Their semifinal encounter followed a similar script. BVSC briefly equalized at 1:1, but Ferencvaros responded with a 4:0 run to take control. After leading 7:3 at halftime, Ferencvaros pulled further away in the second half, winning 16:7.
Vasas Holds Off Szolnok
Vasas entered the semifinals with a 5:1 point advantage over Szolnok. They stormed to early leads of 3:0, 5:1, and 8:2 by halftime. Szolnok fought back after the break, cutting the deficit to 7:9 early in the fourth quarter. However, Vasas maintained control to secure an 11:9 victory.
5th–8th Place Playoffs:
- Honved easily defeated Szeged 7:3 to reach the 5th-place final.
- OSC Budapest edged out Kaposvar in a dramatic penalty shootout, winning 18:17 after a 10:10 draw in regular time.
