Honved close in on second with commanding derby win over Vasas

Honved continued their strong run of form in the Hungarian League, edging closer to securing second place ahead of the playoffs with an impressive 14:13 victory over Vasas at the Komjádi pool.

Despite the one-goal margin, the contest was anything but close for much of the match. Honved set the tone early, racing into a 3:0 lead and asserting control from the outset. By halftime, the visitors had built a commanding 9:3 advantage, leaving Vasas with a mountain to climb.

The gap only widened after the break, as Honved pushed ahead to 11:3 early in the third period, effectively putting the result beyond doubt. While Vasas showed resilience to respond, they were consistently chasing the game. Even with three and a half minutes remaining, Honved still held a comfortable 14:10 lead.

A late 4:0 run from Vasas added tension in the closing moments, but their final goal—coming just six seconds from the end—proved too little, too late to complete an unlikely comeback.

Nikola Moskov continued his excellent form following Montenegro’s World Cup Division 2 success, leading Honved with six goals. Lazar Vickovic added four, underlining Honved’s attacking depth. For Vasas, Peter Szalai scored five, while Soma Lakatos contributed four, but their efforts weren’t enough to overturn the early deficit. Vasas remain fifth in the standings, two points behind Szolnok.

Elsewhere, Ferencvaros maintained their dominant pace at the top with a convincing 20:12 win over Szolnok. The match was competitive early on, with the teams level at 6:6 midway through the second quarter, but Ferencvaros pulled away decisively to lead 15:9 entering the final period. Krisztian Manhercz led the scoring with four goals, matched by Gergo Kovacs for Szolnok.

BVSC produced an emphatic attacking display in a 22:14 win over Eger, with ten different players finding the scoresheet in a well-rounded team performance. Meanwhile, OSC secured a narrow 14:13 victory over Szeged in one of the tightest contests of the round.
