Top four all win as Savona edge Trieste in Serie A1 thriller

The leading quartet in the Italian League—Pro Recco, Brescia, Savona, and Posillipo—all returned from the World Cup break with victories in Round 21 of Serie A1.

The standout fixture came in Trieste, where fifth-placed Trieste hosted third-placed Savona in a high-scoring encounter.

Savona edged ahead three times in the opening quarter (1:0, 2:1, 3:2), but Trieste responded strongly to take a 6:4 lead into the second period. The visitors hit back before halftime, leveling the score at 10:10 in a game that swung back and forth throughout.

Savona gained momentum early in the third, opening up a two-goal lead for the first time at 13:11. Trieste refused to go away and pulled level once more, but Savona’s composure proved decisive. Two quick goals at the start of the fourth quarter pushed them ahead 16:14, and they held that advantage to secure a 19:17 win.

Pietro Figlioli and Davide Occhione led Savona with three goals each, while Trieste’s Vuk Draskovic delivered a standout individual performance with five goals.

League leaders Pro Recco had little trouble dispatching Florentia 18:9, even without several players who featured at the World Cup. Francesco Cassia and Andrea Mladossich both scored four in a comfortable win.

Brescia also got the job done in a high-scoring clash against Roma Vis Nova. A dominant 9:2 second quarter proved decisive in a 22:17 victory, with Vlado Popadic scoring four, while Italian internationals Mario Del Basso and Filippo Ferrero added three each.

Posillipo produced one of the most convincing performances of the round, dismantling Telimar 17:7.

At the bottom end of the table, Ortigia picked up crucial points in the relegation battle with a 21:17 away win over Salerno. The hosts led 9:7 at halftime and the sides were level at 14:14 heading into the final quarter, but Ortigia dominated the closing period to climb above Telimar and draw level on points with Salerno.

Elsewhere, Olympic Roma secured a 13:11 win over De Akker, while the match between Canottieri Naples and Iren Genova Quinto has been postponed.
