Max Casabella linked with move to Barceloneta after stellar U.S. college career

Barceloneta’s summer rebuild may be set to continue with the return of one of Catalonia’s most exciting young exports. According to sources close to the club, Atlètic-Barceloneta are exploring a move for Max Casabella, the Spanish attacker who has just concluded a decorated collegiate career at the University of California, Berkeley.

Casabella, 22, hails from Mataró and was a product of the Centre d’Alt Rendiment (CAR) before crossing the Atlantic to join Cal’s prestigious water polo program. Over three seasons, he established himself as one of the NCAA’s most prolific and complete players, winning three national championships and earning multiple All-American and All-MPSF selections. In his final season, he scored 66 goals in 27 games—including a five-goal performance in the national championship game against UCLA.

A return to Spain has long been on the cards for Casabella, who featured prominently for Spain’s junior national teams and represented the country at the 2021 FINA Junior World Championships. Now, with his NCAA eligibility complete, a move to Barceloneta would not only mark a homecoming but could also add youthful dynamism to a team in transition.

Barceloneta are in the process of reshaping their roster following the departures of key players and a coaching change. The arrival of a local talent like Casabella would align with the club’s renewed emphasis on Spanish player development—particularly ahead of the 2028 Olympic cycle.

Known for his clinical finishing, versatility across the perimeter, and sharp game IQ, Casabella would be a natural fit in Barceloneta’s attacking setup. His international pedigree and elite-level experience in the U.S. system make him an attractive prospect not just for domestic competition, but also in the Champions League, where Barceloneta are expected to once again mount a serious challenge.

While no official confirmation has been made, the signs suggest that Barceloneta may soon be welcoming back a rising star from their own backyard.
