Theo Lorantos as the new head coach for their women’s water polo team. Lorantos, who recently stepped down as head coach of the French women’s national team, returns to the Greek league, where he previously built a distinguished career.

Lorantos succeeds Panos Vergos, who parted ways with Alimos earlier this week.

The club acted quickly to fill the vacancy, securing Lorantos’ commitment just hours after news broke of his resignation from his position in France. Lorantos had guided the French team since January 2023, successfully leading them to the Paris Olympics, marking a significant milestone in his international coaching career.

This return to Greece represents a homecoming for the highly regarded coach, whose career is rooted deeply in Greek water polo. Lorantos brings with him a wealth of experience, having represented Greece as a player in three Olympic Games (1992, 1996, and 2000). His coaching resume is equally impressive, with roles at top Greek clubs such as Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Panathinaikos, and Palaiou Falirou.

In recent years, Lorantos has focused primarily on developing Greek national teams. Between 2017 and 2020, he led the Greek U20 men’s team to a string of successes, clinching world and European titles across 2017, 2018, and 2019. Although he later took on the role of head coach for the senior women’s team, guiding them through the Olympic qualifying rounds, Greece narrowly missed out on a Tokyo Olympics spot after finishing third in Trieste.

At 53, Lorantos joins Alimos with a commitment to building a strong, competitive squad and pursuing new successes in the Greek league. The club is expected to officially announce his appointment soon, ushering in what they hope will be an ambitious and prosperous new era under his leadership.
