Vasas announce Joao Pedro Coimbra Fernandes and five others

Vasas, the runner-up in the 2025 Hungarian League, has officially announced several new signings ahead of the upcoming water polo season, significantly strengthening their squad with experienced talent.

Six new players will join Vasas, notably four arriving from OSC Budapest.

Among the prominent signings is the return of left-handed attacker Tamas Gyarfas, 30, who previously represented Vasas between 2014 and 2016. Gyarfas spent recent seasons with OSC Budapest, and previously featured for clubs such as BVSC, Eger, and Honved.

Another returning player from OSC is Kristof Varnai, a seasoned veteran familiar with Vasas’ culture, having risen through the club’s youth ranks and featuring prominently for the senior team from 2011 to 2016. Varnai, OSC’s captain last season, brings invaluable leadership and experience after stints with BVSC and Szolnok.

The club’s goalkeeper lineup is bolstered by Brazilian international Joao Pedro Coimbra Fernandes, who had a decent season at OSC Budapest.

Fernandes has a strong European track record, with successful spells at Barceloneta, Novi Beograd, and Partizan. He is currently representing Brazil at the World Championships in Singapore, joining fellow Vasas goalkeeper Marton Mizsei, who is competing for Hungary.

Adding youthful energy to the squad is 21-year-old Peter Szalai, recently crowned world champion with the Hungarian U20 national team. Szalai arrives from OSC, previously developing his game at KSI, and was involved in Hungary’s senior national team preparations.

Greek forward Angelos Foskolos comes to Vasas from Apollon Smyrnis, where he impressed by scoring 58 goals in 35 games. He is no stranger to the Hungarian league, having previously played for Szeged during the 2019/20 season.

Returning forward Tamas Csorba completes the new arrivals, coming back to Vasas after previous spells with PVSK Pecs, BVSC, and Szentes, where he was one of the club’s top scorers.

In terms of departures, Vasas confirmed several key exits immediately after the season concluded. Sava Randjelovic and Nikola Dedovic joined Radnicki, goalkeeper Marton Levai moved to Ferencvaros, Benedek Batizi transferred to BVSC, and David Mijic, Roland Gaszt, and Gergely Klar also left the club.

In addition to the player changes, Vasas welcomes back Robert Kovacs to the coaching staff. Kovacs returns after managing OSC’s senior team and previously coaching Hungary’s junior and youth national teams. He will assist head coach Slobodan Nikic alongside Branislav Mitrovic.
