NO Vouliagmeni reignited the Greek Women’s League title race with an impressive 11-9 victory over Olympiacos at the Laimos swimming pool on Friday evening, leveling the best-of-five finals series at 1-1.
The result ends Olympiacos’ unbeaten domestic run in 2026 and marks the first time the reigning champions have lost to Vouliagmeni this season after winning all five previous meetings, including the Greek Super Cup clash and four league encounters.
With the series now tied, the championship battle is wide open once again. The third match will take place on Sunday at the Papastrateio Pool, while a fourth game is now guaranteed and will be played at Laimos on 2 June.
Lola Moolhuijzen delivered a standout performance for Vouliagmeni, scoring four goals to lead her side to victory. Stefania Santa was Olympiacos’ most effective attacker with three goals.
Olympiacos made the stronger start, racing into a 2-0 lead, but Vouliagmeni quickly settled into the contest and responded with a series of goals to edge ahead. The hosts led 3-2, 4-3 and 6-5 before taking a narrow 7-6 advantage into halftime after an entertaining opening two periods.
The visitors fought back early in the third quarter. Maria Myriokefalitaki scored a determined goal following excellent defensive work from Tricha, who produced two quick steals to help Olympiacos level the score at 7-7 with just over six minutes remaining in the period.
As the defenses tightened, goals became harder to find. Vouliagmeni regained the lead through Fountotou from the penalty spot late in the third quarter to carry an 8-7 advantage into the final period.
The fourth quarter produced further drama. Xenaki appeared to extend Vouliagmeni’s lead before a lengthy review following an Olympiacos challenge overturned the goal, keeping the score at 8-7. Santa then equalised for Olympiacos at 8-8, setting up a tense finish.
However, the hosts found another gear when it mattered most. Goals from Fountotou, Xenaki and Krassa sparked a decisive run that opened up an 11-8 lead with just over three minutes remaining. Olympiacos managed one late response, but Vouliagmeni comfortably held on to secure a deserved victory.
A major factor in the outcome was Olympiacos’ struggles on the power play, converting just one of eleven extra-player opportunities throughout the match.
