Queen Mary launches Water Polo match in Korsør, Meets Olympian Emil Bjørch

As part of her Royal Run appearance in Korsør, Queen Mary of Denmark took time to engage with the local sporting community by ceremonially starting a water polo match at the harbour. The Queen tossed the opening ball into the water, officially launching the game in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Among those in attendance was Danish-French Olympian Emil Morgen Bjørch, who represented France in men’s water polo at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Originally from Slagelse, Bjørch has built an impressive international career, playing professionally in France and Italy. His presence at the event marked a significant moment for Danish water polo.

During a brief but warm exchange, Queen Mary expressed genuine curiosity about the sport and asked Bjørch about his Olympic experience and career. Her interest was well received, underscoring the growing recognition of water polo in Denmark.

While Denmark has yet to qualify for a major senior international tournament, the sport is steadily gaining ground. The Danish Swimming Federation oversees a national development plan with youth competitions, training camps, and club-level championships across the country. Clubs such as FREM Odense, OSK, and OSLF have led the domestic scene, with Odense historically serving as the hub of Danish water polo.
