Roma Triumphs in Catania as the Battle for the Top Intensifies in Women’s Serie A1

The fifth day of Italy’s Women’s Serie A1 delivered high drama and pivotal results across the country on Saturday, November 1st. With the battle for the top spot heating up, the round was headlined by two major clashes — and both lived up to expectations.

At the “Nesima” pool in Catania, Roma claimed a crucial 11–9 away victory over Orizzonte, in a rematch of last season’s Scudetto and Coppa Italia finals. After trailing 3–4 at halftime, Marco Capanna’s side turned the game around in the second and third quarters through defensive discipline and sharp execution on man-up plays.
Roma’s Hearn starred with four goals, supported by Zaplatina and Kudella (two apiece). Despite braces from Halligan and Jackovich, Miceli’s Orizzonte could not contain Roma’s determined push — a statement win that reaffirmed the Giallorosse’s title credentials in what has become a true Italian women’s water polo classic.

In another headline clash, Rapallo impressed with a 16–9 win against Trieste. The match began tensely, with Bianconi sent off early for dissent. Trieste led 5–4 before goalkeeper Santapaola saved Zizza’s penalty, sparking Rapallo’s turnaround. From there, Giustini (five goals) and Cabona took charge, propelling the Ligurians ahead 7–5. Rapallo dominated the third quarter, powered by strikes from Vukovic, Bakoc, and Galardi, sealing the win and moving to the top of the table.

Meanwhile, Cosenza continued their strong form, earning a second straight victory by defeating Brizz 15–7 at home. Cosenza raced to a 9–3 halftime lead thanks to clinical finishing from Morrone (five goals), Rozic, and Malluzzo. The pace slowed after the break, but the hosts managed their advantage well, climbing to fifth place on nine points.

After last week’s disappointment, Padova bounced back with a 13–9 victory over Civitavecchia in Viterbo. The game remained close at 7–7 until halftime, but Posterivo’s side stepped up in the third quarter with a 4–0 surge, led by Millo’s hat-trick. The win lifted Padova back into fifth place, level with Cosenza, while the newcomers from Civitavecchia remain without points.

The Ligurian derby saw Bogliasco defeat Locatelli Genova 13–8 in Chiavari. Sinatra’s team made a perfect start, storming to a 6–0 lead in the first quarter and maintaining control throughout. Hardy, Paganuzzi, and Bianco each found the net as Bogliasco climbed to six points, while Genova remain rooted to the bottom.
